Re: Chicken Poultry Husbandry

We got the temperature on the brooder up and there have been no more casualties for the past 4 days. The chicks are hanging out in small groups or by themselves and are generally quiet until the new food arrives. I opened a bag of whole feed corn today with the intention of soaking some to sprout an...

Re: Chicken Poultry Husbandry

We will make a cardboard partition to close off half the brooder at night, and make a small opening so they can move into the extra space if it gets too hot. We'll also find another heat source. Next time we will use a hover brooder and a temperature controller with some type of alarm if it can't ma...

Re: Growing Indoors

The control bed contains 64 onion sets spaced the same as with the towers and also in offset rows. They were placed into the soil and covered with the same mix as is in the towers. They are also covered with a thin layer of straw mulch.

Re: Chicken Poultry Husbandry

You are spot on with the peeping and running. I thought that was a good sign that they were lively and active  I left all the heaters running today and the brooder is sitting on 88F it'll buy us some time to get some heating reinforcements there. Thanks for the info. I'm normally good with rea...

Re: Dehydrator & etc Recipes, Meals in a Bag or Jar

Last year I grew a lot of kale and my family doesn't eat a lot of kale so I had lots of complaints. This year I'm still going to grow lots of kale, but this time I'll dehydrate it and turn it into a powder that can be added to stews and soups. I'll do the same with swiss chard because my family thin...

Re: Chicken Poultry Husbandry

No drafts, but the thermometer show it's getting down to around 66F at night and 75F during the day. The crazy thing is when I water and feed them in the morning they seem happy, but when I do the same in the evening I find them dead. I'm wondering if my disturbing the brooder in the morning is putt...

Next I covered the sets with soil and places straw carefully in the holes to prevent the soil from falling out: onion sets covered.jpg I then repeated this over and over until the pail was full: pail full.jpg I then performed the same process on the other pail, topped them off with straw to help wit...

Re: Growing Indoors

Growing indoors has a lot to do with maximizing vertical space and so this morning I thought I would start an experiment growing onions vertically. I searched the internet and was surprised that there is nothing on growing full sized onions like this. It is also late in the season for growing onions...

Re: Chicken Poultry Husbandry

Yes I have about 75% covered. The floor is cardboard then thick newspaper and then deep wood shavings bedding. The sides are all cardboard. I think we just don't have enough heating capacity. I'm going to keep the fan heater on all day and see if that helps. Maybe at night I can partition off half t...

Re: Chicken Poultry Husbandry

Thanks for the pointer. I was thinking just the other day that being in red light 24/7 can't be good and there had to be a better way to do things. I have an upside down cardboard box in there with a small hole cut in one end as I was thinking about replicating the enclosed dark environment under th...
