Re: Countries hoarding their food

Yeah, looks like most countries will be restricting their food exports. I bet the media in the UK says we should all grow "victory" gardens and dig over all the parks and plant veg! 🙂

Re: What did you do to prepare today?

Spring here in the UK. Just planted up some spuds and put a load of seeds in trays in the greenhouse ready to be planted out when they germinate.

Re: Finances /Cash on hand- Be prepared!

Hi craftealady, That happens here in Liverpool uk a few times a year. Either the shops or the bank terminals go off and everyone is caught out unprepared. I've started adding up my shopping list before I go shopping, then I go to the bank and I draw the total in cash plus £10 extra. Then I shop. I t...

Re: DO SOMETHING: even if it’s wrong!

I planted a dozen peas, 5 spuds and a broad bean seed under little cloches, in one of my plots in late september, just to see what would happen. Peas and broad bean grew and produced flowers. Spud plants didn't get to more than a couple of leaves before they gave up. 2 of the peas have just produced...

Re: What did you do to prepare today?

Bought 4 tins of carrots from home bargain. Sounds boring but we've been looking in local asda and tesco and there were NONE on the past couple of shopping trips. Usually if a product is missing one week its there on the next trip, but not this time. Wondered if they are in short supply after all th...

Re: winter storm crop failure

Here in Britain theres been a lot of flooding. One news report featured a farmer a few miles north of Liverpool. She was describing how they had managed to plant their winter wheat, but the fields are now flooded and the whole crop is likely to be lost. So not only has she lost the crop and potentia...

Re: Herbalist's Apothecary

We planted parsley, sage , rosemary, thyme, oregano, borage, hyssop and peppermint when we first moved to this house. Learning as we go along really, and adding a few herbs each year! We've also got cleavers, nettles, dandelions, echinacea, and marigolds. We've read up on the uses of each one and ha...

Re: What did you do to prepare today?

Hi 8greenbeans, We've not canned carrots, never managed to grow enough before haha! We did a couple of jars of tomatoes though this year. We get most of our recipes and other info from the John Seymour books. Mainly do jams and cordials, black and elderberrys, black currants, raspberries and plums. W...

Re: What did you do to prepare today?

Dug up our carrots the other day and we had 62 reasonable sized ones which weighed in at just under 7lb12oz. Buried some in sand (as per John Seymour) and today we chopped the rest of them up into small pieces and boiled them up. Going to freeze them when theyve cooled down. :)
