Re: Current Storms

Heavy rain and flooding in Western North Carolina. We got a little over 5" of rain today at the airport. Needless to say, it set a record.

I'm all about storing in metal containers myself.

Re: How does your garden grow?

So I went to the tailgate market yesterday (sold everything I brought, yay me!). Anyhow, the biggest conversation among the farmers is the persistent rainfall. Everyone is having a hard time planting. I talked to them about the GSM in a roundabout way. By the end some of them were brainstorming adap...

Hey Kink! You're going to need fresh hardwood chips instead of pine for mushroom production. I'm working on a blog post on King Stropharia production. I'll post a link as soon as I'm done. Good luck!

Re: ARE YOU PLANTING YOUR SPRING GARDEN?

We ate fresh asparagus yesterday and are about to have King Stropharia for dinner. I just harvested it this morning. I've been transplanting lots of spring greens: lettuces, arugula, beets. I still need to transplant kale. Peas, mustard greens, sochan, carrots, onions, and garlic are doing well. I'm...

Re: Cloning

Yeah, I grafted it onto another rootstock but for the life of me I can't remember what it was. Good points about microclimate considerations. People just don't know how important proper siting is.

Re: Cloning

Good on you Farside! I grafted a Pink Lady apple last spring. I was nervous but it wasn't hard at all. It put on probably 2 feet of growth last year. This year it's putting out leaf and flower buds. I've been very pleased with its progress. I'm glad you introduced this topic. This is one of the area...

Re: How does your garden grow?

Just a quick update from NC. We just had our wettest winter following our wettest year ever. The ground is absolutely saturated. I'm about to give up on planting spring greens in the ground and try to grow them all in containers, but that's a lot of containers! During our walks we've noticed yards g...

Re: What did you do to prepare today?

Hey Kink! I'm glad you're going to do containers :D. I do a lot of containers. I don't even put peppers in the ground anymore but I've never had any luck with tomatoes so they still go in beds. Yeah, I do size up but it may not be good to let a seedling root fully develop in the pot. It may slow dow...

Re: What did you do to prepare today?

Yesterday I got more layer feed and azomite. Today I'm going to put the azomite in my various composts and mix some into potting soil. I plant carrots in containers and they require a high mineral content. I need to keep some back for more container plantings and future compost teas but I'm also goi...
