Re: ARE YOU PLANTING YOUR SPRING GARDEN?

No snow here thank goodness! The garden is doing well so far except for insect damage to the kale. Today I started planting corn and beans as well as worked on expanding our medicinal herb garden. I also transplanted some sunflowers. Tomorrow I need to finish transplanting the herbs and then start t...

Re: What did you do to prepare today?

Dig this y'all! I went to The Mother Earth News Fair this weekend where I met Jane Austin. You should check out what she and her husband have done on their homestead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5OPgDPg80c They also run Prepper Camp, a weekend conference in the fall. I think I'll be going this y...

Re: Current Storms

Here's yet another update on the flooding here. Chris with Asheville Fungi had his mycology lab flooded out over the weekend. The water has been pumped out and he's waiting for things to dry before he and I remove the mud and bleach everything later this week. It sucks because he hadn't fully recove...

Re: Chicken Poultry Husbandry

One of my hens has a pretty bad wound on her side, an old wound that was healing but was re-injured so it's worse than before. I'm making a wound wash with yarrow and applying a comfrey poultice twice a day to try to heal this thing for good. She's still laying well and it's worth the effort to not ...

Heavy rain and flooding in Western North Carolina. We got a little over 5" of rain today at the airport. Needless to say, it set a record.

Re: How does your garden grow?

So I went to the tailgate market yesterday (sold everything I brought, yay me!). Anyhow, the biggest conversation among the farmers is the persistent rainfall. Everyone is having a hard time planting. I talked to them about the GSM in a roundabout way. By the end some of them were brainstorming adap...

Hey Kink! You're going to need fresh hardwood chips instead of pine for mushroom production. I'm working on a blog post on King Stropharia production. I'll post a link as soon as I'm done. Good luck!

Re: ARE YOU PLANTING YOUR SPRING GARDEN?

We ate fresh asparagus yesterday and are about to have King Stropharia for dinner. I just harvested it this morning. I've been transplanting lots of spring greens: lettuces, arugula, beets. I still need to transplant kale. Peas, mustard greens, sochan, carrots, onions, and garlic are doing well. I'm...
