Hey Kink,
I headed over to YT. This guy has some better ideas than I had for the fill tank part. Check it out -
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN BERKEY STYLE WATER PURIFIER https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjGxUAOrkrM
Sweet thanks I'll check it out right now, a DIY of this is exactly what I need as just checked the pricing on the Big Berkey + filters and that's just simply not an option.

So using that vid for reference, this would be my shopping list:
  • 2x 16 Quart Cooking Pots OR $43.98 2x 5 gallon BPA Free Food Grade Buckets | $9.96
    2x 5 gallon Bucket Lids | $4.98
2x Berkey Berkey BB9-2 Replacement Black Purification Elements | $75
    Double Sided Tape | $2.98
Berkey Replacement Spigot for Stainless Steel Units | $12.91
    2 Berkey K5366 Pf-2 Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Filters | $41
Total: 175.87 OR $146.83 w/ Buckets

Pretty amazing, the price of the R/O system I wanted was $170 but its replacement filters were $61. Just looked and these black filters also cover lead/metals too now I just need to figure out how to filter out fluoride and I'd be set :D

Update:
The black Berkey filters don't remove fluoride from the water, so you'll need to buy a pair of the optional fluoride/arsenic filters. This isn't included in the video, but it's simple to add them. They just screw on to the bottom of the black filters and then hang down into the bottom bucket.
Easy enough, added 2 white ceramic filters to the list/total above. Added buckets to the list which I'll likely use to cut the price down by a lot, back down to $147 with a set of the black and white filters.

Yes, you can use the buckets, use a lid with hole cutout, like the guy did with the stockpots.

If you're looking at the $70 AQUACREST Water Filter, Compatible with Berkey BB9-2
DON'T get those, they had really bad reviews everywhere. Get the Berkey for $107.
Reminder, I do not make $ on recommending.

Get that red packaged roll of 3M High Stick double sided tape. Not that regular white tape. Wish I was local, I'd share.
I think the pair of black Berkey brand filters are $107, last time I looked. Fluoride pair is ~$50.
I really do like the stainless spigot with the glass water level indicator, they come in different heights for different systems, should almost match height of bottom tank after install. Consider it.
You can see the level. Is a good function, for a bit more $. I forgot to mention the RO filters are pricey, and don't last as long last time I worked out the $$ details.
Yes, that guy did the lid cutout to stop the top pot from being unstable, is way better. I might modify my friend's system.

I saw another vid, a guy who cut the tops off of the 5 gallon plastic Sparkletts bottles and used two for his system. Looked okay. I like SS best.

Okay thank you, I'm going to private message you the black/white filters so I don't have to post them here in fear of them getting bought out before I can start ordering parts. Red 3M High doubled sided it is, I'll look into the stainless spigot, thing is with these projects it's really easy to stray away from keeping it simple, stupid especially when you're in such a tight money spot like I am. $170 may even be too high, we'll have to see what moneys like in a week when I get paid.

You could start out with just the black filters and plastic spigot from a Sun Tea gallon jar.
Then add on the fluoride & SS spigot as time goes on.
It's a good start.

This is the filtration system I use. You don't need two separate filters. It actually filters out everything that the Berkey does with the addition of an extra form of fluoride. I'm not sure if the Berkey also filters out microplastics but Propur does. Here is the link.
https://www.propurusa.com
If you scroll to the bottom of their home page, you can click on links to independent lab results and articles detailing where these microplastics are found in water.
Because you don't have to buy two filters, I have found that Propur replacement filters are less expensive than Berkey.

Not trying to be difficult. What Kink wants is DIY costs just under$200, if he wanted to use 4 filters top & bottom, he would spend about $319 total, and have a larger gallon water holding system than either Berkey or Propura.
For Kink, money is a factor. He will save half of ready made & was the point. They all filter out micro plastics. I forget the micron size, I'd have to look.
I'd done a cost analysis of both for friend, and also filtering analysis. For the Propura SS system in the King sized version, cost is around $600 for an equivalent filter system, but smaller 2 tanks than DIY. For 1 filter Propura's cost is upwards of $49 to $55.
Filtering abilities are basically the same according to test results pub'd.

Ta Ta!
In between little maintenance jobs & written projects. Working in Library and reading, Mozart & SW radio, also looking at new recipes for storage bags. Working up an Oatmeal & Apple Spiced bag recipe. Still watching Apples dehydrate  Should be done tomorrow. Buying list for fresh carrots, mushrooms & onions & needs etc from recipes in book for next dehydrator binge. Citric acid powder did good for Apples.
I want to make a few quarts of Apple Butter, need jars. Thought about trying mylar bags? Not sure, need to find out more.

Where is Elew? I hope all is okay. Wondering how her daughter is doing now? Anyone know?

Just got done using the rest of my sealer bags to seal a few OZ of peppermint tea, lentils, noodles, etc. Slowly working on the fishing pole storage setup from time to time. Got the bike out and have been riding every night building my endurance/stamina back up again, riding on these keystone hills will get your calf muscles rock solid in no time. Just chopping firewood and basic calisthenics has slowly gotten me built and in the best shape of my life :).

Same Andy, I really hope Elew is okay. I will continue to keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers wherever you are. Hope all is okay.

G'day!
Hey Kink! You're doing great! Is it just me? Or is your new pic kinda creepy in funny way?
A good reminder to get back on prepping for the rest of us. I've been putting off the fishing category items. It's on my list. Maybe in your spare time, you could type up a basic beginner list of items we'd need for fishing, keeping it a bit above a string and safety pin?
Got a good start today, Friday tends to be the hurry up day which allows free time to wander and give the mind a rest during the weekend. Gathering up in list of needed 555's, uF caps, 4007's & 470-1Megohm R's for a project.
