Growing up in the 60s that was how all my Nebraska farmer relatives stored lard. I ate tons of it as a child and am still alive and well! Never went rancid as I remember, however they stored everything in a cool root cellar.

BTW saw a great video on YouTube about food storage that was a presentation by a Mormon woman. Of course they are great at storing food. She said shortening was considered safe for a very long time, at least 10 years, probably a lot longer if you don’t open can. I know most people don’t use much shortening, but I stored several cans up as a good source of fat calories. Maybe a last resort but hey, I won’t be that picky! Makes great pie crust (I know lard does too, but no easy, affordable source for me).
