I think only parents toss how frequently babies poop into daily conversation, but it is super important.

So today my oldest daughter called me, with toddler constipation problems...there are plenty of over the counter products, but what do we do when they are not available?

I suggest adding a pack of pediatric suppository molds to the medical supplies... ie... https://www.amazon.com/Alimed-Pediatric ... B015RY8TMY

Some pipettes are good to have, but I prefer glass eye droppers for all herbal prep (which can be cleaned, sterilized and used again)

The basic recipe for making healthy suppositories goes like this;

1 part gelatin
4 parts water or herbal infusion
1 1/2 parts veg. glycerin

Melt the gelatin into the water/infusion over low heat, stirring constantly...then add in the glycerin. Reduce a bit, then fill the molds.

Store the bullets in the fridge for longer term, but once set they should not melt easily at room temperature (or 5 to 10 degrees F below body temp). They should slowly melt if held in your hand...if they do, you know you made them correctly.

They can be used 1 - 3 times a day, until healthy poop cycle resumes...along with belly massage. The root cause will need to be figured out and corrected of course. It can be anything from stress, to diet...

Medicinal herbal suppositories can also be used if a baby/child it not able to drink tea due to lethargy in illness. The intestines absorb the herb readily, but it is uncomfortable so is only used this way in dire situations.

Teething is another one that came up recently...that super red acid diaper rash. Again there are plenty of good creams, but the whole body can be easily treated to make the child more comfortable.

First we make Arrowroot slow baked biscuits (cookies) I will add a recipe later...
We use the dried powdered root and rhizome if you grow it yourself. It is fairly easy to find already powdered for now. Arrowroot is a high protein starch, which has demulcent properties, so it is soothing to the gut as well as the gums. The hard biscuits help to break the teeth through.

The body produces acids to help the gums soften, so we don't really want to neutralize the acid, because we would be prolonging the event. Instead we try to go with demulcents to sooth and give some relief.
Oats are perfect, they will sooth the entire gut, and help counter acid stomach which leads to colic. (though a soda cracker or two before bed is okay...I will add that recipe later too) Baby food can be thinned with oat water too, but no acidic foods.

We do need to neutralize the acid on the other side though. A sink bath with a good cup of baking soda in it tends to clear the acid rash very quickly. After the bath apply a good layer of lanolin for a protective barrier, so the acidic urine does not hurt their skin in the night...(oat baths are soothing too, so long as the acid rash has been neutralized)

A bit of aromatherapy with a mix of;
1 part Lavender oil
3 parts Chamomile oil
1/2 part Peppermint oil

Sprinkle on their pillow, or mix 6 parts sweet almond oil to 1 part sleepy oil mix and use as a baby oil after their bath...and it will help them sleep peacefully.

Edit...I forgot to add Hyland's Teething Tablets https://www.amazon.com/Hylands-Soothing ... B0767VDHXD ...get them while you can...they are pretty amazing if you are busy in the day and have no time for baths.

With all of these things babies and toddlers can get through teething fairly painlessly.

Question of the day... "Mom, am I loosing it? or can 'Little H' have a fever on only one side of her head? I thought the thermometer was broken so I tried another and one side is normal, one side is 101"

Answer..."It can happen...Follow the fever, if it is on one side in a way it's good, because it means there is a localized irritation or infection. Check for ear infection, sinus infection, or see if a new tooth is coming in. Meanwhile give her some echinacea/goldenroot tincture or tea, because the fever shows you something is going on."

This time it turned out to be the very beginning of an ear infection...but SC (my daughter) was able to nip it by giving her a tincture, and then using warm sweet almond oil in the ear to sooth the start of the swelling. With the swelling down the ear could drain, while the echinacea/goldenroot tincture boosted her immune system enough to heal it.

I just became aware that many parents use Miralax to relieve constipation. Miralax horror stories are worth reading into, some kids have permanent personality changes due to the havoc it wrecks on the kids stomach. Avoid anything that isnt natural for your kids and obviously never vaccinate.

MiraLax is the brand name for the generic drug polyethylene glycol 3350, a laxative used to treat occasional constipation.
The drug works by bringing water into the bowels, which helps keep the digestive system regular. Stool becomes softer when the bowels retain water. (meaning it alters your body fluids...aka calcium balance... and acts like an emetic/diuretic, not helpful in healing unless there is fluid retention.)

Common side effects of MiraLAX include:
nausea,
abdominal cramping,
bloating,
upset stomach,
gas,
dizziness, or.
increased sweating.

MiraLax Warnings
Don't take MiraLax if you have kidney disease or an allergy to polyethylene glycol.

Polyethylene glycol 3350 may be habit-forming. If you use MiraLax too often or for a prolonged period of time, you could become dependent on laxatives.

Using it often and for an extended time also could result in an electrolyte imbalance.

People who have or may have a bowel obstruction (blockage in the intestine) should not take MiraLax. Have your doctor rule out this condition before you use MiraLax.

Symptoms of a bowel obstruction include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and a distended belly.

Since at least 2009, researchers have been aware that MiraLax, an over-the-counter laxative manufactured by Bayer Corp., is not safe for patients who suffer from kidney disease. ... Renal failure is also associated with bodily swelling, loss of calcium, anemia, bone health, and increased risk of heart disease.May 6, 2015

A little electrolyte trivia,

There are more electrolytes in one small can of V-8 than in a liter of gatorade

One more thought...

When constipation first begins, it can often be fixed with a simple massage. Adults can do this on themselves, but it works with kids well too.

First lay down on the back with a pillow under the knees.

Next find the top inside corner of the left hip bone...move the fingers in and upwards (one inch in toddlers, 2 inches in older kids) in a diagonal line to this point (if you imagine a line drawn from the inner top left hip bone, to the center of the lowest right rib.)

There, is a valve, between the small and large intestine. Gently, buy firmly, do a deep tissue massage in that area...remembering that toddlers and babies need far less pressure. On older kids and adults, you can really dig in. Massage in deep circular motions, but gently. This will get the valve open, and stimulate the lymph nodes in the area...which will most often fix the problem on their own.

For infants, it is best to lay them belly down over your lap...then holding with you fingers on either side of the spine just above their hips, gently rock them back and forth. Just the weight of their body is enough, and the rocking motion will stimulate the lymphs and the intestines. It works well for colic too.
