2019 RED Alerts!

#1 Post by Andy F » Thu Jan 31, 2019 4:57 pm

This Polar Vortex report is really bad in the North East quarter of USA!
Record low temperatures & wind chills late January 2019, 11 frozen people or has succumbed due to the cold...young and older people, vehicles crashed & they froze before rescues.

So many lessons learned this year at the expense of lives. This is a very difficult year but one the wise will use to move towards a better level of preparedness and sustainability.
Each one of us must evaluate how to be better prepared for next winter after seeing the winter of '19. Cause it is very likely that the up and coming winters will be increasing more dangerous.
May God have mercy on us all!

Yes, sadly it always seems to take the loss of life and a sort of universally bad event for people to think about preparation... I have an indoor cabinet garden, thermo-electric generator and a rocket stove design draft furnace made out of 6 inch galvanised steel duct pipe. I am not allowed to have an outdoor garden in this trailer park, a wood stove and of course not allowed by law to produce my own electricity. I'm still prepared... I hope others will get ready this year...

I read earlier the total deaths d/t the cold temps is 21.

@walterceal..........I believe when the time comes, there won't be anyone who will care if you use a wood stove at your home. The one's in charge will be too busy trying to survive themselves. IMHO I'd keep on prepping and that goes for eventual need for using a wood stove despite any present day laws against. In a real collapse, lawlessness prevails on both sides who're wanting to survive.

I totally agree with you... there won't be much "law" enforcement when everyone is scrambling. With over 300 million people in the US and Canada being affected by these "arctic anomalies", I strongly doubt the actual numbers reported are accurate. Only one small city in B.C. reported 6 deaths from a previous cold snap overnight a couple years ago with regards to homeless people not having anywhere to go and nobody was used to this kind of cold or snowfall in the area. They only have a population of around 80,000 people there. If the same level of inexperience and lack of preparedness applies elsewhere, the 300,000,000 people in Canada and the US affected should report more along the lines of about 22,000 deaths so far... or are most people just lucky? I am not a big believer in "luck" but I do favour predictable probabilities....

It's wild watching the polar vortex go crazy compared to past years. This site is great to give you a visual picture of current wind patterns, temperatures, etc. I made a quick visual below, showing you the wind + temp trend going back to 2014 and now, as well as the spotless sunspot days to go with them. The bigger pictures are February 3/4th, the smaller are January 29/30th. Notice the deepening/widening spread of more intense cold, as well as the difference in the polar vortex split.

My brother just heard from a friend in Ontario that the air temperature is currently -51 degrees Celsius at his home. He has his gas fireplace cranked and the floors are still cold. No word on the wind chill factor but at that temperature, just skip it... We are only at -27 degrees Celsius here in Prince George, B.C. Furnace is blowing, gas fireplace is on... I can't imagine what my brother's friend's heating bill is going to be... Correct me if I am mistaken but is there not another "arctic anomaly" in two parts coming down in less than two weeks? :(

I just came across this image and wanted to share it with you for one reason... These people are out there in these temperatures getting the resources to fuel the machine. Once the temperatures drop enough, are these folks going to be able to keep producing without robotics? Humans can only take so much...

Anything above that 40th Parallel is going to be problematic. Especially in the oncoming years.
Take a look at all the below zero temps now and realize we are really just entering this thing. I can see many people selling and moving further south this year.
Surely there will be population movements. Which makes me ponder further on the building of that southern border wall or maybe I should say, containment wall!

Ozarks on Monday 60F and by Friday 28F. Wild swings here for just below that 40th Parallel.
